Bryan’s 2009 Queen Mary Tournament Report:

Congratulations to all the VCDA members that went to the Queen Mary tournament this year. The event was well attended overall, but particularly by the VCDA. We had a total of 6 members present, and had several members finish in the money.

Bill Neel / and Fred Aguaro First Place Men’s Doubles Chicago

Joey Burt/ Sean Downs Second place in Men’s Doubles Chicago

Larry Gee Top 8 finish Men’s Singles 501

Simon McDade Top 8 finish Men’s singles 501

Bill Neel Top 16 finish Men’s singles 501

Noteworthy rounds:

Simon McDade Ton 80 X 2

Bryan Gosser Ton 71

The format this year consisted mainly of 501, and there were only 3 matches per day. So there was a lot of wait time between games. Even so the event was well run considering there were only 18 boards to play on, and around 100 entrants. The location of the event is much better than it was two years ago when I attended last, but it is a smaller space, and so can only accommodate about 18 boards.

For those that could not make the event this year it was a very good time, and I hope you will plan to attend next year. To those that did make it congratulations on your accomplishments, the VCDA name shines a bit brighter because of your efforts.

Randy’s 2009 Queen Mary Tournament Notes:

Saturday Blind Draw Doubles

Bill Neel and Simon McDade drew each other. They lost in the first round.

Randy Wheeler drew a guy named Patrick (a decent player). There first round opponents were two ladies who drew each other. They never had much of a chance. In the second round, Patrick and Wheeler won the first leg. Then needing another turn for win, their opponents hit a double bull finishing 77 to win the 2nd leg. In the 3rd leg, both teams had about 10 turns at a double, but it was the other team ultimately hit it to eliminate Patrick and Randy.

Chicago Singles

I am not sure, but I think Bill Neel won two or three rounds to get to the round of 16 or whatever round was the one you won your money back.

Randy Wheeler faced his doubles partner Patrick in the first round of Chicago Singles, and took the win. Next round Randy lost to Jeff Moon in a tight match that went to the rubber. Jeff went on to play in the next round against Joey Burt. Joey won that one in the rubber I think.

Sunday

Men’s Doubles Chicago

Bill Neel teamed up with Fred Aguaro in Men’s Doubles Chicago, defeating Joey Burt and Sean Downs in the finals for the title.

Regards,

Randy
