A double World Champion, Priestley will go down in history as one of the greatest ever darts players.
Priestley has reached most of the major finals during a glittering career, which saw him take victory in the 1991 Embassy Championship before adding a host of big titles to his roll of honour.
He defeated Phil Taylor 6-1 in the first ever PDC World Championship final in 1994, but lost in four subsequent Purfleet finals against Taylor.
Priestley was also the beaten finalist in the first three World Matchplay tournaments, losing to Larry Butler, Taylor and Peter Evison.
Although he is - by his own admission - not as consistent as he used to be, Priestley showed that he can live with the big guns by adding the 2005 Le Stratch-Sarantos Retsinas Memorial Trophy to a list of over 100 ranking event victories.
He then took Taylor all the way in a classic second round game at the Stan James World Matchplay before reaching the semi-finals of the Sky Bet World Grand Prix.
That form on the big stage was transferred to the floor in January 2006 when he came through the field to win the Stan James Players Championship in Gibraltar.
